LearnEnglish Sounds Right is the British Council’s FREE pronunciation chart for learners and teachers of English worldwide.

LEARNERS OF ENGLISH

Do you have difficulty with the sounds and pronunciation of the English language, or with understanding the symbols of the phonemic alphabet? With LearnEnglish Sounds Right on your phone or tablet you can practise anywhere and anytime. Just tap a sound and you will hear it. Tap the downward arrow sign and listen to three example words with that sound.

TEACHERS OF ENGLISH

Do you use phonemic script in class to help your students with their pronunciation? With LearnEnglish Sounds Right installed on your class set of devices, or your students’ own devices, you can teach the individual sounds and symbols easily.

The pure vowels are arranged the same way as in the IPA chart: according to mouth shape (left to right, lips wide / round – top to bottom, jaw closed / open).

The diphthongs are grouped in rows according to their second sound.

The consonants are arranged from left (front of mouth) to right (back of mouth). The top two rows of consonants are paired (top row – unvoiced, second row – voiced). When you tap a plosive consonant, the schwa (ə) appears. This is because the plosives were recorded with a schwa for clarity.

Pronunroid – IPA pronunciation

Pronunroid – IPA pronunciation

I’ve already mentioned the IPA above, and if you’re interested in taking that route, then this is your go-to app. Through a series of fun guessing games, you’ll learn which spoken sounds are associated with which letters or symbols. Soon, you’ll be able to look at an unfamiliar word and have a pretty good guess of how it’s pronounced.

In addition to learning the IPA, this app also comes with a search feature that lets you look up the pronunciation of any word.

Pronunroid is an educational game that makes practicing English phonetics more fun!

It’s aimed at practicing IPA (International Phonetics Alphabet) transcription of English words using General American accent. It has four main parts:

  • Guess symbol: In this game, you are presented with three words that share a phonetic symbol which you have to guess.
  • Guess pronunciation: In this game you are presented with a written word and you have to write the pronunciation for it in IPA.
  • Guess spelling: In this game you are presented with the pronunciation of a word in IPA and you have to write the corresponding word. This, in addition to training your pronunciation skills, trains your spelling!
  • Look up word: This function looks up the IPA pronunciation of a word.

Pronunroid is aimed at English as second language (ESL) learners. You can check out the symbols used at Wikitionary.

Right now, Pronunroid uses for the games the 2000 most common English words. However, you can try to look up the pronunciation of any word with the search feature. If Wordnik is aware of different pronunciations, you will get them all.
